14-year-old boy charged with rape and murder of 83-year-old woman

A 14-year-old Baltimore boy has been charged with the rape and murder of an 83-year-old woman.

The boy, Tyrone Harvin, is being charged as an adult, after he sexually assaulted and then killed 83-year-old Dorothy Mae Neal in her West Baltimore apartment.

 

Police say that Tyrone beat the great-grandmother to death after raping her. Police used physical evidence to link Harvin to the crime.

Spokesman Smith said that authorities speculated during their investigation that the killer was young, “but I don’t think any of us were thinking a 14-year-old could be capable of something like this.”

He said there must be something wrong with the kid’s environment for him to be in his current situation, whether guilty or not.

“Almost 70 years separate our victim and suspect. It’s sad all the way around. There’s some systematic failure in the 14-year-old’s life to allow us to be here talking about him being accused of murder and rape. It’s just a very tragic situation all the way around.”

Tyrone has been charged with first degree murder and rape, in addition to various other offences including sex offenses and assault.

 

Tyrone Harvin was arrested on Friday. He had just turned 14 in August. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Sept. 19.
